If I Can Make It There, I'll Make It Anywhere.
The first step to getting to New York is....getting there! Here are some different ways you can travel while listening to your favourite Broadway tunes on your iPod and squeal with excitement about your upcoming Broadway experience!
By Car
Road trip! This is my preferred method of travelling to New York. Relatively fast (around 6 hours), you can travel at your own pace and stop at some fun rest-stops. The catch? Well, besides spending on gas money, you have to shell out a few bucks when leaving your car at the hotel. This usually ranges between $30-$45 per night. Trust me, you will want to park your car. Driving in Manhattan is not meant for the impatient and besides, you can get almost anywhere by foot.
By Bus
Greyhound is the most efficient bus company for travelling between New York City and major Canadian cities like Montreal and Toronto. While it does take longer to get there (about 6-8 hours), there is usually a long wait at the border. You don't have to worry about gas money, but you may have to worry about your sanity with screaming babies during an entire bus ride (this is coming from experience!). Regardless, it is an inexpensive alternative. There are many discounts offered, such as student discounts, early booking discounts, and discounts for booking online. They even offer travel and hotel packages. Each way will cost you around $80, with only the online discount applied.
By Train
AmTrack is the American train company that offers a plan to New York from anywhere in the United States as well as popular Canadian Cities, such as Montreal and Toronto. The plan combined a bus ride to the closest American city, and an Amtrak train takes you from this destination to New York City's Penn Station. The price for a one way trip is around $60 and students save an extra 15%.
By Plane
Getting there in a hurry? You will have to pay the price for it! Flying is the least economic mode of travel, with prices beginning at $400 per way, but you will get there in about one hour, depending on where you are coming from. All the sooner to experience Broadway! For a more affordable plane ride, check out my favourite Canadian site CheapFlights. There are multiple airports in New York: Newark, JFK, LaGuardia, etc. Search for all airports to compare prices!
